Dr. Amal Mattu completed an emergency medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, after which he completed a teaching fellowship with a special focus on emergency cardiology. Since joining the faculty at the University of Maryland in 1996, he has received more than a dozen teaching awards including national teaching awards from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Mattu has also authored or edited 5 books pertaining to emergency cardiology, electrocardiography, and high-risk emergency medicine. Dr. Mattu is currently Associate Professor and Residency Director in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Mike Betzner graduated with Distinction from Medical School at the University of Alberta in 1991 and then completed the Royal College Emergency Medicine Residency in 1996 at the University of Calgary. A Clinical Lecturer in Emergency Medicine University of Calgary, Mike has been a Flight Physician with STARS and Calgary EMS since 1997. He served as the Medical Director of STARS Canada from 1998 – 2010, and remains active as a flight physician doing critical care transports and consults for STARS. The Director of STARS Human Patient Simulator Program since its inception 1999, Mike recently stepped down from this administrative position but continues as a clinical instructor in human patient simulation.
Dr. Farhan Bhanji practices Pediatric Critical Care and Emergency Medicine (PEM) at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and is the PEM fellowship director. He obtained a Masters in Health Professionals’ Education from University of Maastricht and has an academic interest in simulation/resuscitation education. He serves on the Policy Advisory Committee on Resuscitation for Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee and as a member on the Education, Implementation and Teams taskforce of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). Farhan is also interested in international child health and regularly volunteers as an intensivist on cardiac surgery missions to developing countries.
The Founding Director of North York General Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Update, Dr. Isser Dubinsky is also a Past Chief of the Emergency Department at North York General Hospital. An Associate Professor with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Dubinsky is a Senior Associate Consultant with The Hay Group.
Dr. Sara Gray is cross-trained in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care and works in both areas at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. She recently completed a Masters in Public Health from Yale University. Her current research focuses on patient safety and quality of care.
Dr. Dan Howes is an Emerg Doc and Intensive Care specialist at Queen's University. He is Medical Director for the Regional Trauma Program and the hospital's Critical Care Response Team, and the Program Director for Queen's Critical Care Program. Dan's main interests are resuscitation and medical education, and he has established the Kingston Resuscitation Institute, which offers Canada's first Fellowship program in Resuscitation. His research interests recently have focused on Therapeutic Hypothermia, medical decision making and motivation.
Dr. Angelo Mikrogianakis is currently the Head of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at The Alberta Children’s Hospital. He is also the Co-Director of Pediatric Critical Care Transport and the Pediatric Trauma Programs. Dr. Mikrogianakis is Associate Professor of Paediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.
His research interests include Pediatric Trauma Clinical Research, Pediatric Transport Clinical Research, High Fidelity Simulation Educational Research and Pediatric Clinical Practice Guidelines.
Dr. Lisa Thurgur is currently a staff Emergency Physician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and is the Emergency Medicine Undergraduate Coordinator for that site. Dr Thurgur is the Theme Co-Coordinator for Pharmacology at the University of Toronto and is a Clinical Toxicologist at the Ontario Poison Centre. Academic interests, projects and publications include the areas of education combined with both Emergency Medicine and Toxicology. She is involved with formal teaching at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels in the divisions of Emergency Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, as well as with Toronto Emergency Services and the Ontario Poison Centre. She currently is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.
